Travel advice
Thank you for planning to travel to our wedding! We appreciate that some guests are coming a long way to see us, and we want to show our appreciation. Please let us know where you choose to stay in London and we will arrange for you to receive a goodie bag from us.
FLYING TO LONDON
A flights from New York to London takes approximately 7.5 hours, and the return journey takes approximately 8.5 hours. To help find the best flights for you, we recommend using a comparison site such as Skyscanner or Kayak.
Most international flights land at Heathrow airport. From Heathrow, it is a 20 minute train journey by Heathrow Express to London's Paddington Station. Other flights may land at Gatwick Airport. From Gatwick, London's Victoria Station is a half hour train journey by Gatwick Express. Taxis and buses are available from outside both train stations.
Getting around
London has excellent public transport. To use the famous double decker buses, underground and overground train services, and Thames clipper boats, you can use credit/debit cards that are contactless enabled, or you can purchase a pre-paid 'Oyster Card' to use to 'tap in'. Oyster cards can be purchased and topped up in shops with a sign saying 'Oyster Ticket Stop'. Once purchased, you can also top up your card online.
Uber is available in London and can be a less expensive option to London's black cabs. However, if you are in a hurry, choose a black cab! Many cabs now take credit cards, just confirm with your cab driver at the start of your journey. Cabs can also be hailed and paid for using the Hailo smartphone app.
To help navigate the city, we recommend downloading Citymapper. It can help you choose the correct mode of transport for your journey with arrival time estimates.
powering up and paying up
The UK uses a different plug than the US and Europe. Be prepared and bring a travel adapter to power your devices. There are many affordable adapters available online at retailers like Amazon.
The UK currency is the pound. If you plan to use your credit or debit card abroad, remember to notify your bank ahead of time, and be aware of any exchange fees. It is easy to exchange or buy pounds, but for the best deals be aware of the current exchange rates and avoid changing at airports, where fees are often highest.
Tipping is not as prevalent in the UK as in the US. Many restaurants include a service fee in the bill, in which case a tip is not required. If leaving a tip, between 10-15% is plenty. For more etiquette tips, see here.
